How to Acclimate Imported Plants After Shipping βœˆοΈπŸ“¦πŸͺ΄

WHAT IS IMPORTING?

In short, import refers to the process of bringing goods and services into a country or region.

WHAT IS ACCLIMATION?

Acclimation is the process of getting a plant accustomed to their new environment.

Here’s my simple step-by-step checklist of tasks to complete that will give your plant(s) the best chance at survival!

STEP 1

Open the shipment away from other plants. I highly recommend if possible, to open the package outside.

STEP 2

Gently unwrap plants from the paper/plastic and remove media around the root system.

STEP 3

Clean the roots by removing any rotted material using a pair of sterilized scissors and rising the root system with water.

STEP 4

Rehydrate the plant(s) by submerging the root system in a glass of distilled or reverse osmosis water for approx. 24-72hrs. (If you’re going to soak the plants longer than 24 hours, make sure to change the water every day to ensure that the water stays clean and free from bacteria.)

STEP 5

Once the plant is ready to be potted up, use a well draining potting mix of your choice. Most importers recommend using sphagnum moss because it has great moisture retention and allows for good air circulation around the roots. CLICK HERE to shop my favorite brand of sphagnum moss!

STEP 6

Keep plants in a bright, humid environment (80-90%) such as a greenhouse or clear plastic box. Alternatively you can bag up the plant using a clear plastic trash liner by blowing air into the bag and sealing the opening so that air does not escape. Open the box or bag occasionally for air circulation.

STEP 7

Lastly, be patient! The acclimation process can take up to several weeks, sometimes months.

What should I do if the plant does not look healthy upon arrival?

Immediately take photographs of the damaged plant and original packaging and contact the seller ASAP.
